Welcome to Planet Patrol, brough to you by the Iowa Department of Natural Resources. This month, we're going to talk about reducing and reusing. Reusing simply means to use things more than once. You can reuse things for their original purpose, like refilling plastic water bottles. Or you can reuse things for new purposes, like using an old t-shirt as a rag or a shoe box for storage. Reducing means not using as much of something, using only what you need. Like not printing emails or papers that you don't need to, or using a cloth shopping bag instead of getting plastic ones when you buy things. We need to reduce and reuse things because it keeps things out of landfills, it means less litter and it helps save our valuable resources, because we're not making as many new products. We should be reducing and using plastics especially. They're made from oil, which means that plastic doesn't break down and go away, it lasts hundreds and thousands of years. Things we can do that would make an impact would be to get a reusable water bottle and fill it from the tap, instead of buying bottled water. Another example would be to use reusable shopping bags instead of plastic ones. And lastly, try to fix things that are broken, instead of automatically replacing them. Be sure to look at a product's warranty before purchasing. We can all do our part to reduce and reuse.
