Through hands-on projects with open-source, cutting-edge technology like 3d printing, the Open Hardware Makerspace (OHM) will excite students towards learning, empower student creativity, practice collaboration, and learn about equipment that will be in tomorrow's workplaces. The proposal involves two basic components. First, a tool-sharing library to give schools and students access to emerging technologies at little to no cost. Related activities and lessons that encourage real-world application will be publicly available. College teams will regularly facilitate workshops, and high school students will be provided the opportunity to show off and be inspired by the projects of their peers. Not only does a hands-on approach prove students another way to learn information, improving retention, it inspire students by seeing their education is relevant and helping them pursue projects they are interested in.
