A Chance Of A Lifetime; Chapter 4: Avery's P.O.V I stood by my locker, running my fingers through my long brown hair, waiting for my dear friends to show up. They were always late, always. They said they were 'fashionably late'. I was positive that they'd be fashionably late to their own wedding. Quickly, I opened my locker; gliding my fingers across the pictures that clung to the metal door. They were of friends, family, and my idols. I've mentioned I wanted to be a singer, right? Well, I have many idols but, two of my biggest were Kelly Clarkson and Jordin Sparks. Snagging the pictures off the inside of the battered down locker, I watched as my friends slyly made their way down the hall. It was a ghost town at Gateway after the bell rang, even more on the last day of school. If it wasn't for my lovely friends that lacked punctuality I would've been out of those doors over ten minutes ago. "Finally!" I said, slightly annoyed. "What took you so long?" "We made a detour, down hot guy hall." Maddi said, smiling the whole time. Her peppyness was irritating me now. It was summer, can't we just go? We'd see all the same guys next year, and they will all still be their douche bag selves. "Seriously? You just had to see the football players one last time? They'll be here next year! Now, let's go; you're delaying my summer." I said in swift, short breaths. I really did want to leave this place, it bothered me. The way everything was so simple and boring. White and browns plastered the walls, where was the color? But, I was also anticipating when the letter would arrive to the person who had won the intern contest. Yesterday, I was not excited what so ever but, today I was siked. I knew there was a possibility that I could win, or even Maddi. I had never won a single thing throughout sixteen years of living, I was a hopeless loser when it came to contests. I noticed Maddi's smile was growing large as she stared down at her phone. This meant one thing, something was about to go down. "I just got an email saying that letters have been delivered to everyone, one with a congratulations!" she cheered. A toothy grin appeared on my face immediately following her brief statement. "Let's Go!" I shouted, "We'll stop by and grab your letter and then go find mine." I said simply. I was hoping that if Maddi won, knowing before I opened mine would help me deal with the disappointment. We pulled up at Maddi's house. She lived in a large; three story, white house. It had blue shutters and a marvelous garden in the front yard. She sprang from my car to her mailbox and opened it up to find a single white envelope. She yanked it out of the small black box and jumped back in the car. A smile was lighting up her pale complexion. I continued driving as she pulled the letter out and read it to herself. When we pulled into my driveway I noticed her smile turn to a frown. I know it may seem awful but, the moment I realized she didn't win I got a glimmer of hope inside of me. I still could've won. I turned to her and she handed me the letter. She didn't win, she wasn't accepted and she would be staying in Maine this summer. "I'm sorry..." I told her quietly. I really did feel bad for the pretty blonde. She was a good person and deserved this opportunity. "That's alright." She replied, her tone filled with sorrow. "Go find yours!" she smiled, I could tell it was a real smile. She didn't win but, she would still be happy if I did. I raced out to the mailbox and quickly ripped apart the white envelope. I slowly pulled out my letter, the letter that could change everything that has happened in my life. It could mean a new start, a better life, a way to college. The simple hand written letter meant so much more to me than I thought it would, I had never wanted something more in my life. My hands glided across the top of the printer paper as I slid the note out of its original placement. This was my destiny, this is the little paper that could make or break A Chance Of A Lifetime.
