May 15, 2012 - that is such nonsense. male models are men that both men and women consider attractive. Female models are women that both men and women consider attractive. Why do women always do this....Its always worse when its done to a female even though the exact same thing is being done to males.

Iameverything Says:

May 16, 2012 - boohooo... same thing for men. In ads they are fucking beautiful and have flawless bodies like gods. But there is no one crying about it. Going to gym, bye.

stromkald Says:

May 16, 2012 - I'm glad you said this. True, a lot of the man are not blinded by these commercials and do not expect a real woman to look like that, but, the fact is, men DO run the world. Even in western culture we rarely see, lets say, a women president. And, here's the fresh example: Supreme Court Justice Elena Kagan. The highest positions, but most of the comments about her are those refering to her physical appearance. Would they do that if she was a man? And not only men are doing this - women do it too.

candaysium Says:

May 16, 2012 - Thank you so much. <3

stromkald Says:

May 17, 2012 - Unfortunatelly, it is not. In all my time as a graphic designer student I've never been asked from my professors to completely modify a photographs of male models for a magazine and editorials, but the things they're asking us to women... If that's how things are at college, I thought, who knows they are out there, when you get the job! And you know what? They're even worse.

ccpickre Says:

May 17, 2012 - Have you ever watched a commercial aimed at women, where the man is portrayed as an idiot? Or are you judging ALL commercials by the 3 you looked up and then just made a blanket generalization?

ccpickre Says:

May 17, 2012 - Actually, this is wrong for two reasons. 1. Men generally don't like having their pictures taken unless they're forced (wedding, engagement, portraits, headshots, etc). 2. Men don't like having their photos dramatically retouched because it makes them look feminine.

stromkald Says:

May 18, 2012 - And then there's this story. Ofcourse I did. In fact, I've analized and studied both these types of commercials. Sincerely, I don't know whether is worse to see a woman being objectified or a woman that, instead of equality, insists on degrading men so she can prove her prowess. Both is bad, but, let's us go back on topic. Take a walk. Go to buy a magazine. Are there more males or females on covers? How are they represented?

stromkald Says:

May 18, 2012 - 1. generalization 2. most women don't like being retouched either (and i don't see why is bad to look 'feminine'). i'll assme you said a human being don't like too look unnatural. so why would you assume females would want?

stromkald Says:

May 18, 2012 - No, thank you! What an awesome thing is to see someone aware of these problems among all those who would like to ignore them. They are basically trying to say that we see sexism everywhere, and thus expecting us to close our eyes just like they did. This is exactly what this video is about: about people who don't see the problem or are assuming their issue is bigger.

stromkald Says:

May 18, 2012 - but models are models. they NEED to look good. they always do - the point is to have a good model so you don't have to spend hours in photoshop. now, what they do is to change even these unbelievably good looking people - and that's crazy!

ccpickre Says:

May 18, 2012 - 1. No it's not. I'm a photographer. I can tell you from experience, men don't contact me for photos. Those that do, do so for a very specific reason. The rest are because their mothers/wive/girlfriends make them do it. 2. Another generalization. Women do want to be retouched and made to look their best. They may not want to look like stick figures like that Ralph Lauren photo, but they do request to be made to look good. And many even ask if I do in fact retouch my photos because they want that

ccpickre Says:

May 18, 2012 - You claim men are never presented as objects, but look at any fashion ad. Men are arm candy in fashion advertising. Men are props. Not objectified? I think you should research the word "objectified," before you research who is and isn't objectified. You claim both are bad, but only want to focus on women. Sounds like they're not both as bad to you in your mind.

AvalonDraconis Says:

May 21, 2012 - I love this message. Unfortunately, too often I see a message like this right beside anti-pornography and anti-sexuality messages as well. As a woman who long suffered with low-self-esteem, I can tell you a huge step in reclaiming my beauty was realizing my sexuality and not shying away from it. The only problem that I see with porn is the same with the media - the "fakeness" of it. The unrealistic models and scenes. That is the real problem with it.

UkuleleLullabyVomit Says:

May 21, 2012 - Helpful hint: Watch the whole video if you can, before you form an opinion on this woman's stance. Remember, this is just a trailer.

NewCrobuzon Says:

May 22, 2012 - But those images of men in advertisements put pressure on men just like images of women put pressure on women.

romanmonaghan Says:

May 23, 2012 - Yeah, don't get em started, it might reveal em as an ignorant close minded plebeian with bad grammar.

romanmonaghan Says:

May 23, 2012 - So.... therefore what she is saying is invalidated? Connect the dots for me here on how a contrarian viewpoint completely disproves her point!

NewCrobuzon Says:

May 23, 2012 - Uhm, it doesn't, and it wasn't supposed to. I just think the argument was a bit one sided. If someone make a point how body images in advertisement put pressure on women they can't simply disregard the fact that the same goes for male images.

FourthStreetFair Says:

May 24, 2012 - In most cases fat is unhealthy. The less excess fat that you have the healthier you are or have the potential to be. The more excess fat a person has ..the more unhealthy they are prone to be. Blood vessels are clogged up by fat. I know many Big Mommas who are fairly healthy but they would be more healthy if they could lose all of the excess fat. On this point they all agree.

romanmonaghan Says:

May 25, 2012 - No one is disregarding anything. It's a lecture about women are view by society and stuff, and she's using the advertising thing to support her argument. Men in advertising is an issue too, but this lecture isn't about them, it was never meant to be. It's like bringing up algebra in a geology class: yes, they're disputably related, but we're focusing on one, not to the exclusion of the other, but not equally either. Criticizing it for not doing something it never said it would do is stupid.

romanmonaghan Says:

May 25, 2012 - Also: I don't think we've ever heard of male models fucking dying of anorexia. Did you even watch the video? Name any male model who is depicted as a beer bottle. There is pressure on how men are depicted in advertising. but it isn't even close to being the same kind of pressure.

NewCrobuzon Says:

May 25, 2012 - That's because skinnyness is not targeted towards men, but muscles are. And I'm sure there are a couple of guys who abuse unhealthy substances to achieve certain goals. I'm not really sure where your argument is going. Are you trying to specifically victimize women and just ignore men? You realize that men aren't the enemy, the industry is, so to play down the effects on men doesn't really help your cause.

romanmonaghan Says:

May 25, 2012 - The only "cause" here is that you're an idiot, and pointing out how and why is helping that along pretty well. Go ahead and keep thinking all that though, sure you'll get far in life. Probably become a politician or something if you really wanted, or at least get a talk show on FOX.
